Understanding Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a specialist massage treatment. It is very different from conventional forms of massage therapy. Often clients are surprised at the effectiveness of this treatment as it is a very relaxing rather than a muscle stimulating experience. This is because the Lymphatic System is our secondary circulatory system ( Secondary to our blood circulatory system) and it sits just underneath the skin which means the therapist does not need engage the muscles, rather they use a combination of specialised skin movement techniques to enhance the efficiency of the waste and toxin removal system.
These specialist techniques were developed in the 1930’s by Danish Consultant Dr Emil Vodder. Manual Lymphatic Drainage boosts the immune system, as well as helping the body ward off illness. It can facilitate the general feeling of health and vitality. It also can have a positive physical effect in improving the appearance of the skin and reducing puffiness caused by a number of conditions such as poor circulation ( especially for those who lead a sedentary lifestyle). It can also help post operative scarring, fractures and sprains because it naturally helps the body to engage its own healing mechanisms.

My role in helping you to recover from Lymphoedema:

Subject to your Consultant’s approval and as a maintenance post cancer treatment, as a specialist, fully insured practitioner I use the delicate Vodder rhythmic skin movement techniques to help control painful swellings, help to reduce your clothing footwear limitations which in turn will improve your confidence and self esteem. MLD aids the immune system by helping cells fight infection and bacteria to re-activate or stimulate the body’s lymphatic system, improving your metabolism and helping the body to eliminate waste and toxins. It can make your second circulatory system (The Lymphatic System) more efficient and resistant to the cancer returning. The massage works at skin level and influences the speed of lymphatic flow, which in turn encourages lymph away from the swollen area to the nearest healthy lymph nodes.

However, Manual Lymphatic Drainage at Outsidethebox Massage Therapy does not just mean it will be beneficial if you are post recovery treatment for Lymphoedema. Manual Lymphatic Drainage can help these symptoms and improve your body’s overall condition.
